Invent a sound story

Choose a few quiet caregiver-controlled sounds and weave them into a child-led story with no expected plot or performance.

10 minutes

What you'll need

Two or three large unbreakable sound objects chosen and controlled by the caregiver, such as an empty plastic container tapped gently with an open hand

Before you start

Child can choose between simple materials or pretend ideas in their preferred way

Best fit: indoors · medium energy · medium caregiver effort · medium mess

How to play

  1. The caregiver explores each object's quiet sound once.
  2. Choose a character or place and begin a one-sentence story.
  3. Let the child add sounds, gestures, actions or a new direction while you echo their ideas.
Make it easier

Make one voice, gesture or body sound and let the child copy, change, watch or pass; no story is required.

Standard

Choose a few quiet caregiver-controlled sounds and weave them into a child-led story with no expected plot or performance.

Extend it

Record the sound order with simple drawn symbols and perform it again only if the child wants.

What you might notice

Notice how the child connects sounds with characters, actions or mood.

Keep it safe

The caregiver chooses intact, unbreakable objects without detachable pieces or sharp edges and controls any striking object. Keep sounds quiet, never strike near ears, and stop if the child covers their ears, startles or asks to stop.

Why it may be useful

There is no single right result here—the value is in exploring, pretending and sharing the moment.

Outcomes depend on context and the child's interest; sensory preferences vary widely.

How it works
  • Loose-parts picture with large pieces

Arrange large reusable fabric and card pieces into a temporary picture, then change or pack it away.

  • Mix two paint colours

Mix two small amounts of washable paint and explore the changing colour with broad marks rather than aiming for a finished picture.

  • Build a cardboard setting

Turn large clean cardboard pieces into a floor-level setting for toys using folds, drawings and open-ended pretend ideas.
