Thinking & solving

Laundry sort

Sort a few clean items into two meaningful groups.

5 minutes

What you'll need

Four large clean adult towels · Two wide rigid floor baskets with no lids or handles

Before you start

Can manipulate large household objects

Best fit: indoors · medium energy · low caregiver effort · low mess

How to play

  1. Choose one simple difference such as light and dark towels.
  2. Model one of each.
  3. Let your child continue or make a new rule.
Make it easier

Use two very different towel colours.

Standard

Sort a few clean items into two meaningful groups.

Extend it

Sort by colour or which floor basket each towel belongs in.

What you might notice

The features your child uses to group things.

Keep it safe

Use only intact large towels with no loose threads and rigid open floor baskets with no lids, handles or closing parts. Stay within arm's reach, keep fabric from face and neck, stop mouthing, and count and store everything.

Why it may be useful

This gives your child room to explore while you add just enough help to keep the puzzle interesting.

moderate

Guided-play evidence is stronger in preschool samples; toddler activities should remain simple and child-led.
