Move & balance

Cushion-free balance line

Walk beside or along a flat floor line using ordinary steps, side steps or a chosen slow movement.

10 minutes

What you'll need

Low-tack painter's tape or existing floor line

Before you start

Child can walk independently on a clear level surface

Best fit: either · active energy · medium caregiver effort · low mess

How to play

  1. Make or choose one straight flat line on a clear floor.
  2. Walk beside it first, then along it if the child wants.
  3. Let the child choose side steps, pauses or arms out while you stay nearby.
Make it easier

Use a wide path rather than asking feet to stay on a line.

Standard

Walk beside or along a flat floor line using ordinary steps, side steps or a chosen slow movement.

Extend it

Add a gentle curve or flat pause markers while keeping hands free for balance.

What you might notice

Notice which pace and line shape help the child feel steady.

Keep it safe

Use only a completely flat line on a clear, dry, level floor. Do not add cushions, beams, furniture or raised surfaces; stay nearby and let the child step off at any time.

Why it may be useful

This adds a short burst of active play with room to practise balance, coordination and whole-body movement.

How it works
  • Follow the floor path

Follow a wide taped or chalk path on level ground, choosing different safe ways to travel along it.

  • Animal movement choices

Choose a familiar animal and invent a floor-level movement from any comfortable position.

  • Stop-and-go dance

Move to a familiar song and take turns giving gentle stop and go signals, with stopping treated as play rather than compliance practice.
